the librarian (5 book series) 1/2

Looking around the historic library I worked at, I looked at my watch and said ten more minutes. My co-worker Sadie came over and said, "It has been such a long day. What are your plans tonight, Bethie?"

Looking at Sadie, I said, "Going home and making sure the old folks are okay, cooking dinner, and settling in for the night."

"You need a life, Bethie," She said.

Chuckling, I said, "Sadie, you know if I didn't have my Grandparents with me, they would be in some substandard nursing home."

She got a soft look on her face and said, "I know Bethie. What you and Will do for your grandparents is amazing. You are lucky to have a husband like him. But let us get you nerds your books checked out."

Laughing, I pointed to the pile on my desk, and I went to get them. Placing them in piles, I said, "Three for me, four for Will, ten for Grandpa, and ten for Grandma."

She checked out my books and placed them in the bag I had with me. Looking at my watch, I picked up the intercom and announced, "Good afternoon, everyone. It is now four in the afternoon, and we are closed. If you need to check out any books, please come to the counter. Miss. Sadie and I will be glad to help you."

A few people came up to the counter, and I told Sadie, "I am going to go around and lock each room in the library."

The library is one story, and each area has doors that we open between each section every morning. There are fifteen sections in the building, and we cannot lock the doors until we are closed. I walked to the other side of the building and looked around, calling out in each section, "We are closed and I am sealing each section. If you are in here, you will be locked in."

I had to shoo some people who were in the back section out, and by four thirty, we had all the book rooms and offices locked up. We both grabbed our belongings and went out the main doors. Turning around, I locked the doors. Heading to my car, we waved to each other and went home.

Heading home, I found Will's car in the driveway and parked behind him. When I walked into the entryway, I heard a lot of laughter from the living room. Listening as I walked into the room I heard Grandpa tell Will, "Now son you have to understand the woman in this family are a force to be reckoned with. My Annie would volunteer at Bethies Mom school when she was growing up. One day a man came in with his wife. You could tell he roughed her up something good and when he yelled to get his kids out of class so they could do the farm work My Annie stood up and said, You know the kids cannot miss a lot of school. He let go of his wife and said to annie that if she did not want to get some she better shut her mouth."

Grandma who was sitting there looked up and gave me a wink as Grandpa continued, "Well the pricipal tells me later on that when he said that Annie laughed a full belly laugh and told him he had best listen to her. His kids were going to stay in class. His wife was going to visit with her and he is going to stop drinking and go home to finish the chores himself. That and if she sees any more signs of him roughing up his wife or kids he will no longer be able to call himself a man and everyone would know Mrs. Annie was the one who handled him. He walked up to her and stopped when the knife she carried was jabbed against his manhood. He disappeared later that day and some believe his brother in law may have had something to do with it."

Grandma looked up and said, "Some people think it was you, Herman. Because he threatened me. Also I know for a fact it was not her brother as he was at the hospital with his girlfriend who was in labor. I think it was the O leary boys who had something to do with it. Remember those boys helped around the farm and a year later she married the boy's uncle."
