Sitting in the lawyer's office, I watched my family sit around and wait for what they thought was their due. Grandpa died at home, and the only family member there was me. The lawyer came in with a box of envelopes and three binders. He smiled and said, "I am honestly shocked to see so many of you here as Fred did not leave many of you anything."
There was a murmur of outrage through the entire room as many of the people there realized Grandpa had kept his word. Mr Wilkins looked at me and nodded as I realized Grandpa told me everything was about to happen. He cleared his throat and said, "Shall we begin?"
I sat listening to the reading of the will until there were only the three binders left in front of him. He smiled and said, "Hailey, you ready for this?"
Shaking my head, I said, "Not really."
He handed me the binders and said, "He told you its all yours. Now, here this everyone. The apartment is Haileys and all investments are hers as well. All of Fred's business and checking accounts are hers and in her name. Hailey he left you instructions on how you are to use the money. All the information is in those binders with all the information you need."
My great Aunt Helen stood up and screamed, "We will fight this!"
Murmers of agreement went around the room. Mr. Wilkens said, "Frank thought you would say that so everyone please watch this video that Frank had left."
He used the remote and Grandpas face came up on the television. He gave a smile and said, "Hello Hailey and hello you greedy vultures. If you are seeing this then one of you said you will fight my will. Please try and if you do everyone in the rooms dirty little secrets will be exposed. I have intel on all of you and it will start with the smallest secrets and it will end in the ones that are punishable by law. With the exception of Hailey you all have secrets you don't want to have revealed. Let's see who will have the first secret revealed."
My cousin sarah said, "He wouldn't. He knows nothing."
The screen started again and Grandpa said, "The first secret is for my youngest brother Thomas. Every week when he goes to his fishing cabin alone he is actually going to visit is daughter Maggie. Who is Maggie? The daughter he had with his mistress twenty years ago."
We turned to Great Uncle Thomas and he had went pale. His wife Sarah looked up and said, "Is this true Thomas?"
The video started again and Grandpa said, "Sorry Sarah, Mr. Wilkens has proof for you if you would like it. He will hold it for thirty days and everyone I would suggest you all back off because everytime someone says they are going to fight it a new secret will be released and boy you all have quite a few. So much so that there are 667. Well, Six hundred and sixty-six. That is between forty-two of you with the exception of Hailey. Shall I share more?"
Great Aunt Helen put her hands up and said, "No, we understand."
Mr. Wilkens said, "Good. Now, everyone but Hailey can leave."
When everyone left he said, "There was a video left specifically to you."
He hit play and Grandpa came on the screen. "Hailey love I have a secret to tell you. I was part of a group called the explorer's club. This club was people who went to all the continents and traveled to places all over the world. Now the apartment that I had lived in is yours, so consider that your home base. My investment and business accounts are yours to fund your life in the future. Mr. WIlkens will reach out to you about any decisions you will make. If he somehow kicks the bucket his son will take over. Now all my checking accounts have been combined to a large account and is now officially in your name. The binders you have are the business accounts the apartment deed and all the investment forms. The box of envelopes holds one thousand starts of adventures around the world. Each envelope holds account cards to use for those adventures. You have a love for travel and you have a wonderful way of writing about it on your website. I know you hate social media but part of this is for you to start a facebook, instagram, TikTok and youtube. Post your travels mention your website and use that to have a job while you travel. The journal Mr. Wilkens is giving you now has five sections one for each social media account that has been set up for you and has the login information along with a new email for your business you now have for yourself there is also a section for your website. I will be watching you Hailey, live the life you deserve. By the way, if you run out by some way on each of the adventure cards you have enough money in your new account from me. Each month you will get three statements and each of these statements will have a deposit about that deposits to your account on the first, one from the business, one from the investments and one from the properties I have and rent out. Good luck my love and enjoy your life."
Mr. Wilkens handed me a journal and said, "The apartment is ready for you to pack what you do not want. Those items will be sold off and you will have the funds in cash before you leave to take with you in USD. This is the amount in your new personal account."
He slid a statement from the bank and handed me a card, $27,025.325. I looked up and said, "Shit."
"Also, in each envelope, there is a statement with the balance as of when we created the account," He said. "If you have any questions at any time, I have my personal phone number in the journal."
Mr. Wilkins walked me to my car and said, "I will be following the social media and your website. I cannot wait to see what you do."
I went to the apartment and went inside. Looking around I saw all my belongings in my room, six suitcases and twelve boxes. My life in boxes since my parents passed and the family took everything except the cash inheritance I had in my checking account and said, "Grandpa I cannot believe this is happening."
Going into his room I saw a note on the bed. Opening it I read,
The matress is new. There is a safe in the back of the closet, the code is currently your birthday, change it to something you will remember and place the binders and envelopes inside. Also when you travel change your mail to come to the office and we will hold it for you."
Mr. Wilkens
Sighing, I walked into the entryway and took a few boxes back to grandpas room along with the travel luggage and backpack that I found on the dining room table, a gift from Grandpa. I placed new sheets on the bed, and I found a comforter to make the bed. Opening the suitcase, travel backpack, and carry bag on the bed. I figured if I found things I wanted to bring with me when I travel I could pack some things now. Taking my phone, I decided to make a video for social media and my website. I explained the loss of my Grandfather and that he is funding my future travels after I clean out the apartment so it's ready as my new home base. I started with my website and started to upload it as I knew it would take some time. While it was uploading, I began to go through the closet. Adding all of his shoes except for his house slippers, I packed them up. Then I started going through the boxes on the floor. When I heard the bing from my phone signaling the video was completed being uploaded, I worked on the post and then went onto uploading to YouTube. I continued this on all my accounts until I was done with the first video upload. I took out the journal and dated each of the social media.
Looking at the clock, I realized it was getting late, and my stomach was growling. I took the binders and adventure envelopes and placed them in the safe. Changing the code, I confirmed everything was ready to go and went to go get food. Locking the door, I went to the elevator. I walked across the street to my grandfathers favorite deli. I ordered a few things, and when I got to the elevator to go back up a man entered as well and he said, "I have never seen you here before. Are you new?"
"My Grandfather lived here until he passed," I said.
"Frank?" He asked. "Oh you must be Hailey. I am so sorry for your loss, Your grandfather was a good man."
"Thank you," I said. "But Grandpa had a plan; he is sending me off to travel soon."
"He was a character," He said. Handing me a card, he said, "If you need anything, give me a call. My name is Kyle."
"Thank you, Kyle," I said. I handed him my business card. "It was nice meeting you."
I got off the elevator and took the food to the TV room. I put the TV on and watched some shows on youtube. When I finished eating, I felt a new wave of energy. I called Mr. Wilkenson and told him I have boxes ready for pickup and asked how to arrange it. He told me he will send someone for the items in the morning around nine in the morning. I set my alarm for seven in the morning and went back and worked on more of the closet. By the time I started to feel tired I had cleared all of the boxes in the closet on both the floor but the shelves. I had also packed up a bunch of the hanging clothes, I did keep some of grandpas clothes and packed two of his sweaters into my suitcase to have him with me for my first travel. I went to the guest bath and took a shower. Climbing into the guest bed I fell alseep fast.
The next morning, I woke up before my alarm went off and continued cleaning out Grandpa's closet. I made quick work of the remaining clothes. Going to the bathroom, I grabbed a garbage bag and threw out Grandpas toiletries and old lotions and soaps. I threw out older towels and boxed up the decorations. I started the bedrooms, dressers, and threw some things out. By the time the people came to pick up the items I had the entry way full of boxes, and I had them come take the loveseat and one of the chairs in the bedroom. The man scheduled a pick up for seven tonight. He said he understood the situation and wanted to help as much as he could. I finished the bedroom and moved to the sitting room. I packed things I knew I would never want. Grandpa had a thing for fake flowers and I moved the larger ones to the entryway. Packing more items away, I had a large pile in the entryway, along with a few pieces of furniture that I did not want. I grabbed my boxes and unpacked all my belongings, moving my bags to the table in the sitting room. Once I was fully unpacked, I went into the guest room and started to clean out the closet. I was finishing the bedroom when the people arrived again and picked up the newer items. I asked him to set an appointment for one pm the following day. Which he did.
By the end of the week, I had cleared out all the items from the apartment that I did not want to keep. When I finished clearing the apartment, I called Mr Wilkens and told him I was finished with the apartment and there would be a new video by the end of the weekend. Now that the apartment was ready, I went to the store and picked up some staples that would hold while I was traveling. I also purchased things for the house that I would need while I was home.
