I was hired as a midday attendant on what is known as the beach path. This path is a seaside path that stretches two miles. When I was hired for this job, I had to sign a form that I would follow all ten rules. When I asked Mr Franks, "What would happen if we broke the rules?"
He snorted and said, "You will be stuck on the path forever."
I made a few copies of the rules and placed them in my locker.
Rules
1. Have all items needed in your push cart. Follow the master list and never run out. If you run low, go to the nearest hut and restock. Running out could be fatal.
2. If sea fog comes in before the end of your shift. Never answer the voices in the fog.
3. Never leave the path. If someone begs you to leave the path, apologize and say your manager will not let you break the rules.
4. Do not go on a walk with anyone. If someone tries to walk with you on the path, Stop and state you must stay at this location. They will leave.
5. If it gets dark during the day or pitch black at night, climb under the back of the cart, close your eyes, and count to one hundred. When you open your eyes after 100, the light will return.
6. If the sound goes quiet around you, go to the nearest hut and lock the door till the sound returns. If you hear voices calling for a vendor while the noise is gone, do not respond.
7. Never ask for tips, however, you can accept them if the customer places them in the tip jar. You cannot ever take them in your hand. You can point to the sign on the cart.
If you do not follow the rules, you could be killed. I found this out from a former employee who reached out to me after seeing me on the path. She said that she has seen people vanish when they break a rule. she told me that she knew the money was good, however pay what I need to and leave as soon as I could. When she left the cafe we met at I sat there thinking about why I needed the job. That was easy, I needed the pay on this job because my exfiance took all my money and cancelled our lease, breaking up with me leaving me in debt for $55000, and I am currently living in my minivan in my friend's driveway. My minivan has a bed, kitchen, toilet, and I normally go to the gym in the morning to work out and shower. My goal is to get a RV so I have more room. Then once I have the RV and all my bills paid off I will be in a better situation. All of my tips go towards my bills and RV.
I went to work and was sitting in the break room, enjoying the air conditioning for a few minutes, when my boss came in as I was looking over my bill folder. He looked at all the sleeves and said, "I know it is none of my business, however, you are orgnized, may I ask what it is?"
I sighed and said, "100 percent transparency?"
He nodded and said, "No judgment."
"Two months ago my ex fiance stole all my money and left me $55 thousand in debt," I said. "While he did that, he also cancelled our lease, which I had paid a year in advance. So I am currently living in my minivan, paying off the debt and if things go right I will purchase a RV and buy a small piece of land to put it on."
"Land is expensive," He said.
"I know," I said. "I was buying a piece of land in the state forest before we broke up. On my days off, I go out there and work on the property. I can now get my van off the road and onto the property. It backs up to the lake, and I am working on fencing the property now and placing a dock along the whole back end of the property. I am hoping to have it all cleaned up in the next year."
"How do you handle all of your bills?" He asked.
"All my tips go to the land after I make sure the monthly bills are paid off," I said. "I clean my friends house since she lets me stay in her side driveway, then I pay 20-50 a paycheck towards my debt. My land payment is $125 a month I try to pay $125 every week. Once the land is paid off, my taxes are only 100 a month, and my insurance is only $50 a month so I can handle this with this opportunity here."
"Well, you are lucky that your first paycheck is the first week of January," He said. "Also, remember you get your tips nightly, so you are very lucky. You should have your debt paid off very fast. January's schedule is up on the board."
"Thank you," I said. I placed my bill folder into my backpack and went to the office to clock in and get my change belt. I took my cart and looked at my master list, making sure the cart was filled to the brim with everything that was on the list. I pushed the cart out onto the path and started my shift."
The day on the path was slow and my boss came by a few times to check on me. When items would run down I would stop at the nearest hut and load up so I would not run out. Thankfully, I did not have to worry about the rules today, although I had them all memorized and was looking out for all the rules. When I got to the main office, the boss man had me park my cart and bring the tip jar, which is colorized so you cannot see inside, and my change belt.
We sat in the cash office as he took the ledger of my sales and matched that against the cash in the change bag. He looked up and said, "This says you are twenty-three dollars over."
Nodding I said, "I had a few customers that said, keep the change and walk away. I left it in the change bag as I did not want to touch the change per the rules. Also it makes me feel funny with the though of placig anything in the tip jar."
He gave a smile and said, "Maggie, you did the right thing. Do not fret. Your ledger matches what you scanned out from the main stock room and supply huts. Now let us see what your tip jar looks like."
Unscrewing the lid, he pulled out cash and change. He said, "Well, Maggie, you should take yourself out to eat. You have $105.13 in tips here. So you made $128 in tips. We normally put the change back into the jar for the next day. What a great first day."
He handed me a form to sign, with the tips, and said, "I hope you have a great night."
Smiling, I said, "I sure will."
Going out to my van, I drove to my friend's driveway and pulled in. A few minutes after I parked I heard a knock on the door. She came in and said, "We need to talk, Maggie."
Smiling I said, "What's up Jess?"
"Max is being a dick and is questioning when you will be leaving," She said.
"He wants me to leave," I said.
"Yes," She said. "I told him that he can pay for someone to clean the house, or he can do it, as I work way to hard and will not be cleaning on my days off. I also reminded him that you are not here twenty-four-seven. You stay at the property on the nights you are off the following day and as soon as you have the RV you will be living there as soon as you can."
"Oh my," I said. "Am I not cleaning enough?"
"You clean more than enough," She said. "I will let you in before I leave in the morning. He forgets that his brother lived rent-free inside for a year and never did anything."
"Listen if things get rough, let me know," I said. "I will go out to the property and live there before I get the rv."
"Nah Maggie," She said. "I wanted to give you a heads-up. But how was the new job?"
Laughing I said, "I made $128 in tips the first day. I went to the bank and deposited $75 and paid that towards the land payment, for the payment due at the end of the month. The rest is in my wallet for gas or things I would need."
She smiled, "That is awesome. How much do you make an hour?"
"Twenty an hour plus tips," I said. "But there are so many rules. I bring home about 675 a week after taxes."
She said, "Girl the land will be paid off fast and then you can get the RV purchased. Remember you have to have $3000 in savings for the deposit so your payment is not crazy. But damn if you are making tips like that, you can pay the RV off very fast."
"I know I currently have $400 in the savings account from when I was door dashing," I said. "I will be adding more to savings once my monthly bills are paid off, besides paying off the property."
She looked at her watch and said, "Max will be home in a few minutes. I will talk to you later on."
Smiling, I said, "You know where I am if you need me."
She chuckled and left. I made myself a tuna fish sandwich and set up a show on my laptop. I curled up in bed and ate as I watched some videos on YouTube. I made sure my alarm was set for 5am as I had to be at work at 7am. I fell asleep and woke up before my alarm went off. Climbing in the driver's seat I drove to the gym and got a quick workout in. Then I showered and headed to work. I pulled in as the sun was rising.
Walking into the office i clocked in, I sat down and grabbed my folder. Walking to my cart, I filled it and overpacked it. I made sure that I had a large amount of stock and enough change for the day. I went to the cart and brought it outside. I saw the rays of sun peeking through the clouds and the fog fading away.
I started walking down the path, selling drinks and snacks. People would drop money into the tip jar and I heard quite a few keep the change from customers. Around ten in the morning all the sounds started to fade away. I grabbed my change bag and headed into the hut a few feet away. As I sat in the hut my phone chimed and I saw a message from Mr. Franks that asked, "Please tell me your in a hut."
I responded, "Yes sir and the quiet is loud type of quiet."
Listening for sound, I suddenly heard, "Vendor, where is the vendor I would like to purchase something from them?"
Mr. Franks sent another message, "If stuff is missing from the cart, do not fret, refill it from the hut and the tips in your jar will have your payment. The things in the dark pay and tip very well. Remember to be discreet about what happens on the path."
I started to hear the waves sound again and then I heard birds. Smiling I sent a message that the sound is back and all is well. Mr. Franks sent a message that said, "Same here. Check in with you soon."
I opened the door to the hut and saw that the cart was missing a few items. I refilled the items from the hut and added a few extra just in case. Then I shut the hut and continued down the path. I felt someone behnd me and I saw there is a person following me and I said, "I have to stay here, have a good day."
The person dropped a tip into my tip jar and walked a few feet, then faded to nothing. I continued to walk the path and nothing else happened the rest of the day. When I met up with Mr Franks, I handed him my tip jar and cash pouch as I wheeled my cart into the storage bay. I loaded it for the next time I was in. Then I joined Mr. Franks in his office and he said, "My dear you are a natural and you have dealt with the rules perfectly fine. That paid off for you well. You have $500 in tips today. A lot of cash in the tip jar, however, I am guessing you heard keep the change a lot today."
Sighing I said, "This is amazing, I am so thankful."
I went to the bank and deposited $450 into my checking account. I messaged Jess and said, "See you Wednesday night, I am heading to the property."
Jess replies, "I hope you have a great day. See you then."
I went and got Chinese food and headed out to the property. Pulling in, I set myself up and paid my bills from what I had deposited that day. After I paid the bills, I started to watch TV and relax in nature. I fell asleep to the sound of crickets.
When I woke up the following morning, I opened the door to the van. I thought about building a home for a split second and decided the RV was going to be the best option for me. I ate a light breakfast, then grabbed the wheelbarrow and started the foundation for where the RV will be parked. I decided that the driveway was going to be rocks, stone, or cement slabs.
