The Bayport Lady In White
All over the world, there are stories about the infamous ladies in white. The love-scorned woman wanders the roadways or waterways looking for a ride or, in some cases, causing an accident after being in the car with the driver. These women had taken their own lives and, in some cases, murdered their children. From most accounts and research, most of the men targeted are somehow unfaithful to the woman they're with, or she'll appear as a beacon of hope for women who are going through a similar situation that she had gone through. Let me tell you the story of my encounter with a woman in white.
This lady in white in question for today's story is a very mysterious woman. After years of research, I still have not yet found evidence of who she was or how she passed and became a lady in white. These women always appear in the area where they had spent their final moments. I checked old newspapers and historical documents for where this happened and could not discover who she was. I know she exists because my children and myself have seen her. When I mean saw her, I mean hit her. The lady in white ran in front of my truck, and I could have sworn I hit her because not only my children who were with me but the couple in the car behind us heard the impact.
I was talking to an acquaintance, and he suggested that the white lady could have been part of the migrant or homeless population at the time. From the turn of the century until the 1980s, it could be hard to get to some locations as there were very few roads. From the 1900s to the 1980s, there were also a large migrant and homeless population in the area. I do know from newspaper articles that unmarked graves had been found around the area this incident happened, but who this white lady is is anyone's guess.
As someone who keeps track of local ghost stories, I didn't know about our mysterious lady until I had my run-in with her. My ex-husband and I were separated ten years ago, and my children and I have been having a rough time with it. We would have night drives when we were restless. What we would do is drive to Hernando Beach and go to Bayport docks as a way to relax.
Well, one night, as we did our drive-thru at Bayport and we were heading back home when the incident happened. We were less than 30 ft from the exit, and there she was running, from one side of the road to the other clear as day. I slammed my brakes because I thought she was a human, and I thought I had hit her. The man driving behind me also hit his brakes. He jumped out of his car and ran up to my truck. He asked if I was alright and put my SUV in the park position as I was frozen. He told me to stay put. He went to the front of my truck, shook his head, and bent down to look under my SUV. He popped back up and said, "Where is she?" I was out of my SUV faster than you can imagine and ran around the car and looked for her. We then looked at both sides of the road and searched for this woman we thought I hit. We were confused that we had missed seeing her go to the side of the road. Everyone thought we heard the sound of my truck hitting her.
The man's wife, who was in the car behind us till this point, got out of the car and asked if we were alright. The man told his wife there was nothing there, and she said we all saw her. She made the sign of the cross as she said that the woman we saw must have been a ghost. As she said the words, it dawned on me that she could have been a lady in white or an apparition. It has been over ten years since I have seen her, and I honestly think she was reaching out to me because of the rough time I was going through. I hope for her she is now in a better place.
