My Grandfather was a taxi driver. When he passed away, he left me his condo, three cabs, and his business. I learned quite fast that my Grandfather had a unique clientele, and I learned all about the people and creatures he used to drive.
Chapter 1
My cousins left the funeral home laughing, and I went to my grandfather's small home that was left to me in his will. Looking around the home, I sighed and placed my luggage in the main bedroom. His small home had a basement with a laundry room, A master bedroom with a closet and mathroom, a spare bedroom, an office, a kitchen with a pantry and stairs to the basement, a spare bathroomm, a breakfast nook and a living room with a fireplace. Then off the living room was the garage which holds his taxi car.
Sitting in the kitchen, I read the letter he left for me.
My Dearest Lindsey,
I am so proud of the young woman you have become. I wish I could watch you chase your dreams. One day, I will be celebrating wherever my soul ends up that you are on the New York times best seller list. But now that you are reading this letter, I know you at least have a home and some funds to go with it. In my cab, there is a journal about my customers and a phone that is paid for over the next ten years. You can write and work the cab whenever you wish. You may find money around the house. I was always stashing it. Read my journal before you put the phone on. My customers knew at the end I was sick, and all have said they will check the phone line whenever you are ready to start. Go to the office and open the locked box in the bottom drawer of the desk. There is close to fifty thousand to start you off. I hope you make the home your own, and I will be watching from the other side.
All my love,
Gramps
I took the journal and walked into the kitchen. Looking at the fridge and pantry, I did not see any food left. Opening the cabinets, I did see dishes and pans. Everything in the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom was clean. Looking at the time, I saw it was the early afternoon. I went to grab my purse when my phone rang.
Looking at the screen I saw it was my roommate, Kelly. Answering I said, "Hello?"
"Where are you, Lindsey?" She demanded.
"Today was my grandfather's funeral, Kelly," I said. "I was going to stay at his old house tonight. What's up?"
"I have all your stuff packed in Ben's truck," She said. "You need to move out."
"You went through my things?" I said. "I swear, if anything is missing, I will go to the police. We have a lease agreement."
I heard Ben say, "Give me the phone."
"Ben," I said. "What the hell is going on?"
"Kelly is a freaking whore that is what is wrong Kelly," He said. "Do not worry I went through the house with a fine tooth comb and have all your belongigs as well as mine in the truck. Everything from your room, all your toiletries, everything from the kitchen. Can you text me your address I can bring your things to you. I have Steve with me to drop everything off. I will explain when I get there."
I texted Ben the address and decided to walk into the pantry. Looking at the boxes, I decided that it would be the first thing I clean out. Looking through the cabinets, I found a box of garbage bags and went into the pantry. I found a bunch of bakeware and small appliances. Going into the garage, I found a few boxes and I started to go through everything. I loved the pantry as it had a large cabinet to hold the bakeware and small appliances, Two rows of built in shelves to hold all the food items and a large deep freezer which had a bottle of water frozen in the center of it. I was sorting the large cabinet when my phone rang and it was Ben.
I answered, "Ben, are you here?"
"Not yet," He said. "Did you eat?"
"Not yet," I said. "I was going to go get food and you called so I am working on things till you get here."
"Alright," He said. "I will bring you some food. After we unload your stuff Steve is gonna head out, and I am gonna explain to you what happened. After we talk, you need to change your address. I have your mail from today."
"Okay, call me when you get here," I said. "I am in the pantry, so I may not hear you."
I pulled over a card table and emptied the top part of the cabinet onto it. I filled the first box with things I did not want and continued on with sorting everything. When I had finished the top part of the cabinet I had found $200 and place that money in my wallet. I didn't want to use a lot of the money Gramps left me while I was cleaning the house out. I was going to put the drawer out when a text went off on my phone from Ben saying he was there.
Opening the door I asked, "What happened?"
Steve walked in carrying garbage bags full of my clothes and kissed my cheek as he said, "That girl is fucking crazy. Where can I drop our clothes and laptop?"
"Master bedroom," I said. "It's the door next to the fireplace."
He came out and asked, "We have your bed where do you want it?"
Opening up the gust room door I said, "Drop it in here for now."
Him and Ben carried all my things in and placed the in the corresponding room. When they were done Steve said, "We will get dinner and catch up soon Lindsey. I have to get back to Molly."
We waved and Ben handed me a meal from panera. I asked, "What happened, Ben?"
He sighed and said, "I had been seeing Kelly for a while without telling you or Kevin. When I got home from my dad's house this morning, she was on the couch with Kevin and he was balls deep in her. When I walked I asked her what the fuck since her and I have been seeing each other for almost six months. While his dick was in her she said, you and Lindsey need to get out we are going to be exclusive and want the house to ourselves. I told her she needs to give us our deposits back. She said she will cash app them to us by the end of the week."
Handing me a bag, he said, "This is your gaming system and your jewelry box."
"Thank you," I said. "So what are you going to do?"
"Well I see you have a large driveway past the garage," He said. "Would you mind if I park my travel van here? I will run a hose and an extension cord. But I will empty it at the campgrounds drop site. I will pay rent."
"Where is the van," I asked.
"My Van and a few belongings are in a storage center," He said. "Will you let me be your neighbor?"
Chuckling I said, "No Wild parties and sure. Rent starts on the first, Four hundred a month."
"Damn Linsey that is cheap," He said.
"Mow the back yard then," I said. "Plus the rent."
He put his hand out and said, "Deal."
Looking at the bag, I said, "Thank you for the Panera, however, I am not to hungry yet. So I am putting it in the fridge, Look in the boxes on the table, Can you use any of that for your van set up? After I drop you at the storage center I am going to get some food to get started with. While I clean out the pantry."
He looked through some of the items and took some smaller pans for his air fryer. He helped me carry the items to the truck and we dropped them off at the church thrift store. When I dropped him off he said, "Where are you going shopping?"
"Target," I said. "I will admit I did take some money from the inheritance and I am going to spoil myself."
He chuckled and said, "You should."
Before he couldl say anything else we both got alerts ad saw a alert from cashap. Mine said, "$2200 was sent to you by kelly. Note said, refund for rent and deposit."
"Well," I said. "She did something right."
Ben chuckled and said, "Well, we can spend the money she sent us for spoiling ourselves. I will see you in a bit."
"Do you want me to wait to see if you need a jump?" I asked.
"It will start," He said. "Steve came here with me before I came to your house."
"Okay, I will see you at Target," I said. "I am going to park towards the back so I can load the truck a few times."
I had the cab on the back of my truck. I went to Target and started with the first cart. After 30 minutes, Ben came in with a shopping cart and saw me checking out. He asked, "First cart?"
Laughing, I said, "Nope, second."
We shopped for the next hour, and when we went back to the house. Ben backed his Sprinter Van to the end of the driveway, and then he backed in his truck. After he backed in, I pulled into the driveway and started to unload the truck into the house, placing the bags on the floor in the kitchen.
Ben knocked on the back door and said, "Do you have anything that needs to go to the church donation center?"
"Not at the moment," I said. "I am still sorting the pantry and have the rest of the house to go."
