I come from a large and broken family. Honestly, I live in the shadows and do not say anything to keep the peace. Being the youngest, I was able to avoid the drama. That was until I turned eighteen. Then I was dragged into everything. What my family didn't know was I had been taking notes. The drama stops with me.
Sitting in my bedroom I rent with my best friends I looked at the text message my mom sent me, "FAMILY DINNER BE THERE AT 6PM."
I groaned and my roommate Matt came to my door and asked, "You alright Lily?"
Handing him my phone he looked and raised an eyebrow. I said, "Why can't they leave me alone?"
He chuckled and sat next to me as he said, "You know you do not need to go. You can stay home and decline the invite. Or go and know you can walk out at any time."
Sighing I said, "I might as well see what they want now."
Matts girlfriend tessa poked her head in and said, "We will drive you and pick you up. Matt and I will not mind plus I want pizza and there is one around the corner from your parents' house."
"If shit hits the fan," Matt said. "Come to the pizza place. If things get real bad tessa and I will come get you."
At 5:45, Matt dropped me off at my parents' house, and Tessa said, "We love you Lily. They are but a blimp on the radar."
"I love you guys as well," I said. Then I walked to the door and knocked.
A few minutes my Dad came to the door and said, "Hey Lily I am glad you showed up."
"Mom shouted at me to be here," I said. "I would rather be home in bed sleeping."
Dad looked towards the kitchen and then hugged me. I felt him place something in my bag and then my pocket. I looked at him and said, "Understood."
He said, "Man we should get coffee sometimes I miss you."
"I miss you to Dad," I said.
The doorbell rang and my Mom came running down the hall, saying, "Ben is here with the family."
No hi Lily or anything the golden child arrived. My Dad squeezed my hand and I nodded. The door opened and mom squeeled, "Ben it has been so long."
Ben said, "Mom we had lunch last week."
Dad and I looked at each other and I knew Mom wanted something from me. Dad led me to the dining room while Mom fawned over Ben and his Wife Claire. Dad asked, "Where are the kids?"
Claire said, "My parents are watching them."
When we sat down Dad asked, "So Lily how is work? I bet you are super busy."
I went to reply and Mom cut me off, saying, "Ben, you must tell us about your newest business idea."
Dad said, "I asked Lily about her Job Susan. Ben can wait a moment."
Mom said, "Phil, she can wait Ben is here."
The look on Dads face said it all as I said, "Its okay, Dad. We will go get coffee this week and talk. So what are you doing now at days ben?"
