🎄The Walk (100 Book Series)- Updated 12/29

Monday, November 28th

Have you ever come to a point in your life where you say, "Forget it, I am done?" I had that moment and decided that I was going to change my life. Looking around my parents' home, they left me I decided there was nothing left for me here anymore. I decided to sell everything, and I decided the first thing I was going to do was hike the Appalachian Trail.

I started to do my research. When I told my best friend Amy what I was going to do she asked, "Are you sure?"

I said, "I have never been so sure in my life. Besides you and your family, no one speaks to me anymore since my parents left me their entire estate."

Her husband, Jack, said, "Well, if this is what you want to do, Becca, we will stand behind you 100%. Are you sure you can afford this?"

I nodded and said, "My parents left me a large amount of money. I am also going to sell a lot of the items in the house before I go."

Jack and Amy looked at each other, and Amy asked, "What are you going to do with the house?"

"Why," I asked.

Jack looked defeated and said, "The house we were going to buy fell through. You know we are not picky, but Amy and I are going to start IVF before we look into other options. Would you consider renting to us?"

Looking at them, I said, "What is your plan?"

Amy said, "We want to build. It will cost a bit more and we did find land out in the country. Jack and his Dad can do most of the work themselves, but, it will take a lot longer and we do not want to go into a large amount of debt. We wouldn't be able to move for about three months because breaking our lease would cost us a small fortune."

I thought for a moment and said, "How about this? It is going to take me a bit of time to liquidate the house. You know how big this house is and how many things are in here. If you let me keep one bedroom and store what I want in the attic storage room, then you guys can rent from me. Since the taxes are paid for the next five years, you will sign an open lease. $250 a month, and you take over the utilities. I can have my lawyer draw up a contract. That way, you can buy the property first, pay it off faster, run the utilities, pour the foundation, and get the house built."

Jack said, "You would do that? If you did, we have enough for the property, foundation, and utilities. We would also have enough to start the framing and get started."

"You have a design?" I asked.

Amy said, "Yes. It will have everything we want, and it will all be new. It means we could have our family sooner than we thought."

"Well, I guess you better call your realtor and tell them you want to buy the property before someone else scoops it up," I said.

Jack said, "Let me make that call."

While Jack went to another room to make the call, Amy said, "What if you come home before we are finished?"

"That is why I will have my own room upstairs," I said. "The Appalachian Trail is the first of many trips I may take. I have my website, and I believe that it is going to focus on my trips. I will be leaving at the end of February or sooner. First things first, though, I am going to get rid of everything my family fought over at the funeral. Since the party room is empty, I am going to set up tables and place everything in there that I am selling. I am going to get solid totes and clearly label everything I am storing and keeping. Oh if you wouldn't mind, I will keep my car here covered."

Jack said, "There will be no problem with that. All we ask is that there is a way to communicate with you to make sure you're safe."

"Deal," I said.

When they left I walked through the house and said out loud, "I hope you are okay with what I am going to do, Mom and Dad. It's to much being here without you."

My parents were my world and when they passed in a plane crash my world shattered. Amy and Jack were there from me through everything. Including both sides of my family trying to come in and take everything they built. Thankfully, their will was ironclad.

Climbing into my truck, I headed to Home Depot. Going in, I purchased four long tables, hanging rack,s, and fifteen large heavy-duty totes. When I went home, my Aunt Cindy was waiting in the driveway. I opened the garage and placed everything inside. Shutting the garage door, I asked, "What do you need?"

She said, "Hello to you as well. I wanted to ask you a question."

"What is the question?" I asked.

"Can I live with you?" She asked.

"No,' I said. "I am leaving in a few months, and I already have people who will be renting from me. No one will be able to try anything."

"You're renting to strangers?" She asked.

"Not at all," I said. "They will be watching the house once I leave, and when I get back, they will be here with me."

"Well," She said. "I think you're selfish."

"Like you and both sides of the family trying to take everything my parents left me," I asked. "If we are done, I am going to get the house ready to sell things."

"You're selling things?" She asked."Why not give everything away?"

"Because it is going to fund all my trips I am going to take," I said. "Like I said, we are not discussing this anymore."

Locking my truck, I went into the house, locking the door behind me. Getting the tables and hanging racks out of the garage, I went to the party room and set everything up. I grabbed all the totes and headed up to the storage room, and opened the door. Grabbing a box, I started to sort. Placing the better items in a basket to display, I worked hard until dinner. I placed chicken strips and fries into the oven. I took pictures of things I had in the party room and posted them on the local community sell pages, announcing that I would be hosting a private sale on Saturday, unless someone wants to make legit offers on things they see in the pictures. No holds, cash only. As I ate, I had some offers come in for items. Arranging sales for tonight before eight I worked on my website, The World Of Becca.

After I ate, I set an alarm for nine that night and headed back upstairs to the storage room. Getting back to work, I only stopped when people came to pay for and pick up items. When my alarm went off at nine that night, I had cleared about a quarter of the storage room, had sold some things, and people tried to get me to let them in so they could shop more. I had to respectfully decline. Explaining that I would update the posts tomorrow after 1 with some new items, however, the browse and shop will be on Saturday, starting at seven in the morning.

Tuesday, November 29th

Waking up I sat up to the sound of thunder and chuckled. The mood seemed fitting. Now you must be wondering why I am not giving things away if I have so much money in my checking account. That is easy, My parents would say that if I did not want it, I could not give it away because both sides of the family were always asking for things. Putting on a pair of slippers, I headed downstairs and went to get a cup of coffee. I started the coffee and went into the sell room and took some pictures. After I arranged a few sales for the morning, I posted the new pictures and headed back up to the storage room. I was lucky the party room was empty except for the closed blinds. So as I added things to sell I knew that I would be good and everything in the pictures was for sale.

When my alarm went off at 1pm, I had sold a few more items, and I moved more things down to the party room. I took more pictures and changed them out for the post, and updated the post. I went into the kitchen and made a sandwich when my phone rang. Looking at the screen I saw it was my cousin Maggie. I sighed and answered, "Hey Maggie, what's up?"

"I don't want anything," She said. "Listen, I am sorry for what everyone is doing to you. I am sorry you lost your parents they were always good to me."

"Thank you, Maggie," I said. "It has been draining with everyone asking for things."

"I can imagine, and that is why I am calling," She said. "Uncle Carlo is going to try something. When my Mom was on the phone with him she was warning him to not go against me. My Mom is sick of the shit going on as well. She wants her brother back and has told everyone that it was always your parents wishes that you travel the world."

"Well," I said. "I will be traveling. My best friend Amy and her husband Jack will be house sitting while I walk the Appalachian trail. It helps them out as they are building a house and they needed to save some money for IVF."

Maggie squealed and said, "Oh, how exciting! Mom and I adore Amy. A home and a baby are just perfect. We will be your backup while you're gone. Also I will lov to join you for certain legs of the trail."

I made a sandwich while we were talking and agreed hiking the trail with Maggie would be a great time. Taking my Sandwich and drink back up to the attic storage room. I said, "Well, I hope by the time I finish this storage room, I will be able to get things sorted at a decent pace. I want to start the trail around the end of February. My plan is to start on the Kathadin Summit in Maine and go south from there."

Maggie said, "I will be able to join you a bit further south as I get vacation time in the middle of March."

We spent the next two hours talking as I worked on the attic storage space. When my alarm went off that night, I had sold some more items, made plans with Maggie for the hike, and had almost finished the storage room. Not very hungry, I decided to continue on with the storage area. Right before nine that night, I finished clearing out the attic storage room. Taking the totes to what would be my suite, I labeled what was in the keepers so far and noticed I did not keep much at all. I took the key to the attic storage room and hung it on the wall next to the door of the suite. Walking to the sitting room closet with a crate, I opened the closet door and groaned. There were all my grandparents' clothes frozen in time. I grabbed a chair and placed the items I decided to keep. Slowly, I cleaned the closet out and brought clothes down to the clothing racks. I had about a third of the closet done when I started to feel hungry. I took the items for sale downstairs and took some pictures to post on the sale site.

After heating up the leftovers in the fridge, I took the warm plate and sat in my room. While watching the television I loaded my laptop and loaded my blog that had sat dormant since my parents had passed. I wrote an article explaining my absence and my parents' deaths. I explained what was going to happen now with the house being cleared out and my upcoming travels. I had so many positive comments and an outreach of love and compassion, I knew I was making the right choice.

Placing my plate on the side table I curled down and watched tv until I fell asleep.
