I work as a nanny for many wealthy families. During high school, I was in classes for childcare services. When I graduated, I had a degree and a job waiting for me. The first family I worked for was the Klines. They were an upper-middle-class family with two small children. The first was a four-year-old boy named Marshall, and the second was a two-year-old girl named Sammy. The father Mark was an accountant, and the mother Linda was a nurse.
When I went to interview Linda said, "What kind of experience do you have?"
"Since my freshman year in high school, I have been working with children," I said. "Last year during my senior year we did internships at the school's daycare."
"Do you know how to make simple meals for the children," She asked.
"Yes I do," I said. "If you don't mind I can show you my YouTube page. I do have a page based on simple and healthy meals on the cheap. My Grandma raised me, and she taught me a lot of things about food and stretching meals."
She perked up and said, "I would love to see that what is the name of the channel?"
She took her tablet off the counter and I told her the name is, "Molly's Kitchen."
Mark and Linda pulled up my channel and watched a few of my shorter videos. After a few minutes, Linda said, "Those videos are quite impressive."
Mark asked, "If you were hired, do we have your assurances that you will not post our children."
I gave a small smile and said, "I would never post any children in my videos. My videos would not be done while I am working. I normally do them when I am at home."
Linda looked at the follower count and said, "The subscriber count is quite impressive. You have slightly over twenty thousand subscribers for a concept of healthy cooking with basic ingredients."
"Healthy, satisfying meals do not have to be expensive," I said. "My Grandma raised twelve children and then me. Convenience foods are nice, but in this economy, they are expensive and impractical."
Linda nodded and said, "Well, Molly, I think you will be perfect for the position. As explained in the ad, the hours will vary weekly. Some weeks you may be working over fifty hours a week, and some weeks you will have twenty. We will have a schedule for you on Tuesday before the following work week. The pay is $20 an hour, and besides helping with the children, we would ask for basic schooling when you are here, cooking them fresh meals if you are here with them, and then while they are sleeping, doing some chores if time allows."
"Do you have a specific curriculum for the children?" I asked. "What kind of meals do they eat, and are they allergic to anything. Also, I would ask if you have a specific chore list that you please write it out for me before you leave. The pay sounds fair based on my experience, and what day does the work week start and end, also when is payday?"
"The work week runs Sunday through Saturday," Linda said. "Your pay will be sent to you on Sundays. Our last Nanny had a Cash App account, and we would send it on Sunday morning."
"That sounds good," I said. Taking out my business card, I wrote my Cash App information on the card.
Mark said, "If you could come by on Friday, Linda will have you meet the kids, and she will give you a tour of the kitchen."
I asked, "Can the kids help with the meals?"
Linda said, "Away from the stove, yes, they can. They help us as well, but kids are kids, and as you know, they can move fast. We have a massive pantry, and we will load the house with food staples and fresh fruits and vegetables. I think you will be starting on Monday. I will have a schedule for you later tonight."
"Perfect," I said. "I can plan my week of filming around my work schedule."
Linda's eyes perked up and she asked, "Oh, how do you plan?"
"I make a plan of what recipes I will cook," I said. "Then I create a shopping list and make orders for pick up."
Mark said, "Do you include shopping lists for your recipes?"
"I do," I said. "We have to keep a budget. I am also working on meal plans for all sizes of families."
Mark asked, "If it is just you, what do you do with the surplus foods?"
"I make freezer meals with some of the foods," I said. "I have a freezer in my laundry room, and I had a lot of members of my church who were in a tough spot with the extra summer expenses, so I blessed them with many micro meals. I normally use freezer bags to store soups and stews or I get microwave safe conatiners from the restaurant supply store. That and I inherit a bunch of containers from the church members I bless."
Linda said, "That is an amazing thing to hear."
We spoke for a few moments longer, and I stood up, saying I would see them at ten on Friday. I left the house to head home. I pulled up to the home I inherited from my Grandma. My small home was my base and my peace. I only wish my grandparents were still here with me because I know they would be proud of how far I have come.
With the fall weather upon us, I decided to start a menu that would reflect that. With soup, muffins, desserts, casseroles, biscuits, and stir-fries on the list, I created a shopping list. I placed four pickup orders and went to get the items, and decided to pick up more containers for the leftovers.
