396 remaining
Looking over my classroom, I said, "Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to Paranormal 101. There are currently 396 students in this class for the year. By the end of the year, there will be fewer than twenty left in the classroom. Consider yourself my 396 ghosts. Now you may be thinking this was an easy A class. It is not. You are required to do actual work, and the field trips will test you to your very core. The reward you will receive at the end will be amazing. Last year we had eleven students standing at the end of the semester. Each of these students have a job now in a paranormal location. So please watch this video and my former students will introduce themselves."
I put the video on where the eleven students who passed the class at the end of last year introduced themselves and did a short blurb about where they are now. Each one of the students stated good luck and to stick to it. When the video was over I went back to the front of the room and asked, "Who is ready for more information?"
I saw many hands raise in the room and I smiled, "Well this year as seniors you are fighting for a coveted thirty spots. Eleven of those spots are at the locations that my former students are at. You would be hired on based on your performance here."
A student in the back stood up and walked to the front microphone and asked, "What if the entire class passes?"
Smiling I said, "In the ten years I have taught this class, out of between 250 to five hundred students last year I have never had more than twenty students make it to the end of the class."
Flipping her hair she said, "That does not seem very fair does it?"
"It is all based on hard work and you will discover what you are made of during this class," I said. "However, if more than thirty students make it through you will be guaranteed a position in various places around the world. I have a list of companies all willing to hire students. The students with the top grades get to chose where they want to go in order of your grades. Like I said for this opportunity you have to put in the work in order to be qualified."
A younger man got in line behind her and she gave him a look and went back to her seat. He asked, "What can we expect Miss Mason?"
"Great question," I said. "Take a seat and we will go over what is going to happen."
Sitting on my desk I started the expectations, "During the year you will visit over 50 paranormal locations in a five state radious. These places normal folk cannot get into. In some locations you will be in isolation to investigate. You will meet various paranormal investigators, psychics and mediums. You will do research and papers. If you can handle the work and investigation load in this class you will be onto amazing adventures."
Lifting up a stack of papers I said, "This is a release form for the class and if you want to leave we will fill them out and you will not be charged for the class."
Lifting up a backpack I said, "If you chose to fight for a coveted position you will receive a bag and will be charged for the class. These bags are filled with Paranormal Equipment and your binder that has an outline of what we will be doing. Remember the trips are covered in the cost of this class. So I am going to go to my office and let you think about it while video footage from last years investigations plays for you to get an idea of what is happening. I will be getting the waivers for you to sign if you choose to proceed."
I pressed play for the video and walked outside the class. Max my teachers assistant joined me at the viewing window and he said, "I have a feeling we are going to loose quite a few students today."
"Same," I said. "I see a few students though that seem to have potential. How is your thesis going?"
"Good," He said. "I cannot wait for this years investigations so I can add to it."
"Work in progress?" I asked.
"Just like your books," He said. "I heard you have not renewed your contract for next year."
Chuckling I said, "That is why I missed my meeting this morning. I signed another five year contract this morning so don't worry your stuck with me and you will finish your thesis while I am here."
"Good to know Doc," He said. "Well it looks like we may have scared the masses in there with the video. "You ready to filter the dead weight?"
Taking the handle of the first cart I said, "Lets do this."
We pulled the carts into the classroom and I paused the video. "Well well well. Everyone this is my teachers assistant Max. So I see some of you are on the fence. So we are going to do this in groups. First if you chose to stay your first assignment is in the binder. I want a three-page paper on a paranormal event that speaks to you. There is a badge in your bag that will allow you into the archives of the library. Max will be registering your badge if you chose to stay while we fill out the paperwork. From here you will head to the library and meet Mrs. Grayson the head librarian. She will be your point person for the archive. Please join us back in the classroom at four pm."
Max and I sat at the desk and I said, "If you made a decision please come forward."
The guy who came forward at the beginning walked up to the desk and said, "I want in."
"What is your name?" I asked.
"Calix," He said. "I already know where I am going to choose at the end of the year."
Taking out the form for him to sign Max handed him backpack and his badge. He turned to the class and said, "Come on guys if we make it through we get a job after college."
He left and I said, "Well Calix broke the wall who is going to join him or leave."
A lined formed and the next few students decided to stay. Then the first student decided to leave. She said, "Although I would love to do this my religion would not allow me. I wish everyone in the class good luck but I cannot stay."
"Thank you for your honesty," I said. "Please go see Mr. Kolman he has a historical class similar and he has something similar. Take this referral card Shiloh."
In the next ten minutes Shiloh, Aurelia, Ellis, Joseph, Mason, Eleanor and Elizabeth had left the program. Max went to their pictures and removed them off the board to show everyone who was left. He turned around and said, "Has anyone else decided?"
I pressed play on the video and as the video played more came up deciding to stay. Then we had another handful of students decided not to stay. I handed Max a pile of names to remove the pictures from the wall. We got down to 355 students on the list and Max and I stood up and I said, "It seems like a few of you need to watch more to decide. We will be back in five minutes."
When we came back there were more students in line and we registered more and removed a few. Max continued to remove pictures and by the time it was lunch we were down to 332 on the list. Max went to pick up our pizza and when he came back I was working through another line. I said to the students, "Sorry everyone we will be eating while we do this. However you cannot leave until you decide."
Then came the girl who said she thought it was not fair. She gave a smirk and said, "I am going to stay to prove that this is a rigged class."
"Well Hazel," I said. "I cannot see the defining moment when you change your mind."
The next few hours we continued on with the registration and removal of students. By the time the last student left the room we had filtered down to 316 students. By the time everyone came back to the classroom we had removed all the pictures of students who had decided to leave. I started the actual class.
"Well everyone welcome to Ghost 101 and I am your teacher Miss Callie Worthington," I said.
One of the students called out, "The Callie Worthington the horror writer."
"The very same," I said. "All three hundred and sixteen of you are who are going to be in this class. So the paper I assigned is due Monday August eleventh. Our first trip will be the night of August 23rd. Who would like to know where we are going?"
Hand shot up and I said, "That is what I like. We are going to the state forest and you will be sleeping on the outskirts of the settlers encampment. You can either sleep on the covered pavilion or you can bring a small two person tent. We will go over the encampment at our first class on Monday. Congratulations to everyone who decided to stay. Also if you decide to quit the program you will be given a limited refund for the class as you all have been charged as of now. See you outdoor list for what you can bring with you. The encampment will be providing a meal."
Max stood up and said, "This is a private entrance to the encampment so no one can join us. Good luck everyone and we will see you on Monday."
316 Ghosts
We watched the students leave the class and I said good night to Max and headed to my cottage at the edge of town.
