Magic Rising (3 book series)

Looking at my home burn tears slid down my face. Standing at the back of the ship I heard the screams on the monsters who were killing the people still trying to escape. The Captain put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Grace join the others there is nothing you can do."

Turning towards him I heard a roar from the Island. Turning back my hand shot up and a shield formed around the boat. Yelling I said, "Who are they?"

Lowering his head he said, "Magic hunters. They seek out any magic and siphon it for evil."

Using one hand to hold the shield I used the other to send water balls to intercept the fire that was being sent our way. When we finally were out of range my best friend Max caught me as I passed out. As the darkness took me he said, "I have you Grace."

As the darkness over took me I thought back to what led up to us having to escape. That morning our island was preparing for the annual harvest and magic festival. Max's parents, who owned a shop in town came out to our land near the water to help my parents with the food and festival games. Max's parents raised and sold herbs they grew on their roof top garden along with wood crafts that Max's Dad made in the workshop of the store. Our parents were best friends and Max and I grew up along side of each other. While our parents worked in the house and or workshop, Max and I worked in the garden harvesting various foods to store away in the town and our own personal basements. Since we were a town full of magic the foods would not rot and would stay fresh in the harsh winter months of the island.

As we worked Max said, "You know our parents are expecting us to do the joining tonight?"

Looking up I asked, "Are you sure you want to be joined with me Max?"

He gave me a look and said, "Grace you know how I feel about you and you feel the same for me. You know the joining means we want to have a future but it is not a marriage contract. We have time before that."

Sighing I said, "What if you change your mind? We have seen so many people change their minds after the joining."

He came over and took my hand saying, "Grace if I have been sure about anything in my life it is you."

Sighing I said, "You sure?"

He lifted me to a hug and swung me around saying, "Of course woman. If I could marry you today I would. But we are to young still."

Hugging him back I kissed him and said, "Fine."

We stood kissing for a while and had sunk to the ground when we heard the bells start to ring. We jumped up and he said, "That is not good. Come on let us get back to your house."

We started running to the house and Dad came running out with Max's dad on his heals. "Stay here both of you we will see what is happening."

Going into the house both of our Mom's looked worried. Mom grabbed a bag and placed some of my belongings into it. I gave a questioning look and she said, "Just in case Grace."

We went to the porch and watched towards town. Soon both of our Dads came running back and Dad had one of Max's horses. He grabbed Max and told him to get on. Max asked, "What is happening?"

"The invaders are at the main gates and they are not human," Dad said. "Max you and Grace have to get to the docks where all the young ones are being sent to. No matter what you kids do not look back and get on the ship. Grace you may have to help with spells to protect the young ones on the ship."

Max jumped on the horse and Dad lifted me on the back. Mom handed me the bag and said, "We will spell block the home and one day you will be able to come home. We love you."

We heard a shrill cry and Max's Dad yelled, "Go now they breached the town center."

Max put the horse in a run on the trail to the docks at the far end of the island. We heard screams behind us and saw other riders with Children on horses. When we got to the docks we set the horse free and Max and I started helping children along the gang plank. The Captain said, "We leave in ten minutes. We will leave a few small boats for another ten minutes."

A guard from town came tearning from the road with a cart full of children. He yelled, "Make ready to leave there is no one else we can save. The monsters have taken the town and everyone prisoner."

We helped the children down from the cart and he said, "I was loading children to come and they came with a force that blocked anyone else. I was lucky to get these ten here."

I looked back and said, "Mom...Dad."

Max took my hand and said, "Grace they will fight. You know our parents."

We started up the gangplank when one of the monsters came running through the woods. Instinct got me and I formed a fireball from my hands and released it at the monster. Yelling, "Get everyone on board."

I was the last one on the gangplank as I prepared for more focusing my magic as Max led me backwards. Another came  through and I released the fireball. It let out a shriek as it was hit. When I was on the boat I said to the captain, "Raise the sails."

He went to say something to me and stopped. As soon as the sails were ready I created a gusts to get us away from the shore. When we were one hundred yards from the shore the woods erupted with an onslaught of creatures. I summoned fire arrows and sent them flying to shore taking down some of the creatures.

The creatures left standing started to return fire as I asked, "Who are they?"

This brings us back to where I passed out. As I slumped to the ground Max yelled my name and I heard the captain yell, "Bring her to my quarters. Max stay with her she saved us all."
