Looking at my home burn tears slid down my face. Standing at the back of the ship I heard the screams on the monsters who were killing the people still trying to escape. The Captain put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Grace join the others there is nothing you can do."
Turning towards him I heard a roar from the Island. Turning back my hand shot up and a shield formed around the boat. Yelling I said, "Who are they?"
Lowering his head he said, "Magic hunters. They seek out any magic and siphon it for evil."
Using one hand to hold the shield I used the other to send water balls to intercept the fire that was being sent our way. When we finally were out of range my best friend Max caught me as I passed out. As the darkness took me he said, "I have you Grace."
As the darkness over took me I thought back to what led up to us having to escape. That morning our island was preparing for the annual harvest and magic festival. Max's parents who owned a shop in town came out to our land near the water to help my parents with the food and festival games. Max's parents raised and sold herbs they grew on their roof top garden along with wood crafts that Max's Dad made in the workshop of the store. Our parents were best friends and Max and I grew up along side of each other. While our parents worked in the house and or workshop, Max and I worked in the garden harvesting various foods to store away in the town and our own personal basements. Since we were a town full of magic the foods would not rot and would stay fresh in the harsh winter months of the island.
As we worked Max said, "You know our parents are expecting us to do the joining tonight?"
Looking up I asked, "Are you sure you want to be joined with me Max?"
He gave me a look and said, "Grace you know how I feel about you and you feel the same for me. You know the joining means we want to have a future but it is not a marriage contract. We have time before that."
